H. Upmann No. 2 Cigar Review

, By: John Smith

  • Length: 156 mm
  • Ring: 52
  • Score: 4/5

Origin and Price

The H. Upmann No. 2 is from Cuba. A box of 25 costs about $165 in Cuba, around $6.60 per cigar. In Canada, online duty - free vendors sell them for about $17 each, and full - retail can be over $24 due to high tobacco taxes.

Appearance

The brown wrapper has an oily sheen. Seams are not visible, and veins give it a rustic look. There were a few water spots on some samples. The nose offers hints of cedar, cocoa, and Cuban soil. The cigar is firm with softer spots near the center.

Construction

Construction consistency is an issue. There are periods of 3 - 4 cigars without problems, followed by 3 - 4 with construction issues ranging from minor to dissatisfying. However, the 2012 samples seem to have better construction.

Flavor

  • One third: Starts with spice and Cuban saltiness, then settles into a rich cocoa flavor with a velvety finish and muted pepper.
  • Two thirds: A blend of salty front - end and spicy back - end. Aromas of wood, cocoa, coffee, and a thick sweet caramel - like texture. Hints of leather, vanilla, and mild citrus emerge briefly.
  • Three thirds: Hits a sweet spot at the halfway point with a balance of strength, sweetness, and Cuban saltiness. Flavors are like semi - sweet chocolate with coffee, tobacco, and cedar undertones.

Value

At Cuban prices, it offers good value. But due to construction issues, it's rated 4.25/5. If you can tolerate uneven burns, it's worth trying for its flavor.
