Origin and Basics

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 2 is a Cuban hand - made cigar in the Robusto format. It has a box code of Dec 2011, weighs 11.66 g, and a box of 25 costs around $250.

Appearance

The wrapper is slightly darker than Colorado shade, with a nice sheen and firm to touch. The cap is well - applied and the double band gives it a classy look. There are two prominent veins, which led to a half - star deduction. Pre - draw has earthy tones and hints of cedar, and pre - light aroma is woodsy/earthy with a sweet undertone.

Construction

The draw starts a bit firm but opens up well. It produces a large volume of smoke. The brownish/white ash is firm at first, becoming flaky midway. The burn is even, though it may need some flame after removing the second band.

Flavor

  • First third: Sweet with hints of white pepper, coffee, tea leaf, and mild salt. Later, it turns more chocolaty with hints of cocoa and dark chocolate.
  • Second third: Continues with sweet coffee and other undertones.
  • Final third: Outstanding with sweet coffee, slightly salty and peppery finish, and hints of dark chocolate and cedar.

Value

It can be pricey depending on the source. In Cuba, a box of 25 can cost $142.50 (Cuban Pesos). In Canada, prices range from $9.50 to $24.00 per cigar, usually around $13 - $16.00. It's competitively priced compared to other top robustos.

This cigar is suitable for both seasoned and novice smokers, and it's definitely a great addition to any humidor.
