Product Introduction

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure Especial is a Cuban cigar in the Robusto Extra size. It's hand - made. A box of 25 costs around $275.

Pairing

It was paired with a light red wine in the first third, two 'Illy' double espressos in the second, and alternated between whiskey and filtered water in the last third.

Appearance

It has a beautiful dark - brown wrapper. The Monterrey band and the Epicure Especial double band are well - done. The wrapper is smooth with a toothy binder showing through.

Construction

The burn was about a quarter - inch uneven. It lasted 80 minutes. The ash was solid and not too flaky, falling off only twice.

Flavor

  • First third: The wrapper smelled of spices and earth. Pre - draw was herbaceous and earthy. After lighting, there was a short spicy bang and a Cuban twang. Woody undertones, earth and mushroom hints appeared, and it produced a lot of smoke with a pleasant herby after - taste.
  • Second third: Cocoa, spice with a mild chili - like flavor, and more earthy tones emerged.
  • Last third: Spicy tones faded, and earthy and mushroom flavors came forward. In the last 6th, flavors almost completely faded.

Value

It offers good value for its size.
