Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo du Roi SLB Cigar Review

, By: John Smith
  • Brand: Hoyo de Monterrey
  • Length: 5.6 inches (142mm)
  • Ring Gauge: 42
  • Score: High (excluding draw issue)

General Information

The Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo du Roi SLB comes in a box of 25. It has a Corona shape, with a Cuban origin. The wrapper, filler, and binder are all from Cuba, and it's hand - made. The price is $12.

Appearance

It has a classic Cuban appearance. Unbanded in a cedar cabinet, the wrapper is light brown and silky with a few puckered veins. It has a triple cap, and the bunching of tobacco is expertly done.

Draw

The draw was a bit tight, likely due to over - humidification. The cigar seemed too wet, and it's hoped that aging in a cabinet at 62% - 65% RH will solve this issue.

Taste

  • One third: It starts smooth and creamy, with pronounced flavors of cafe au lait and wood, and hints of black pepper and Cuban earthiness. The pepper notes are subtle.
  • Two thirds: The smoke becomes medium to almost full - bodied, developing more spice while maintaining creamy/chewy characteristics.
  • Three thirds: There are several hard - to - identify subtle flavors that make the smoke engaging.

Overall, except for the draw, this cigar is excellent and its flavors are outstanding. It's reminiscent of a 1999 Hoyo du Prince, ranking high on the reviewer's list.
