Just cracked open this sampler box of five from La Aurora's anniversary collection. The 5x50 parejo format feels substantial without being overwhelming – perfect for exploring their three different wrapper styles. At around $11 per stick in this sampler pack, it's positioned as an affordable entry point to premium Dominican blends. The Connecticut and Broadleaf versions caught my eye immediately with their oily sheen, though the Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper looked slightly drier straight out of the box.
The Emerald Ecuador blend starts with barnyard earthiness on the cold draw. First light brings unexpected white pepper through the nose – surprising given its Connecticut-like appearance. Burn line wavered slightly in the first inch but self-corrected without touch-ups.
Transitioning to the Diamond Broadleaf at the 15-minute mark: thick smoke output with bitter chocolate notes battling cedar sweetness. Noticeable tar buildup near the band on the Sapphire Connecticut variant – recommend clipping more off the cap initially.
By the last third of the Nicaraguan-heavy blend, the nicotine kick becomes pronounced. Leather and charred meat notes emerge behind the pepper curtain. Had to put it down at 45-minute mark with 1.5" remaining – classic Dominican strength creep.
These needed 45 days rest in 65% RH after transit. The Broadleaf wrapper developed small veins during acclimation but no unravelling. Smoke time averaged 65 minutes across blends. Pairing tip: Skip sweet cocktails – try mineral water with lime wedge to cut through the Broadleaf's tannins.
