How to Calibrate a Hygrometer

A hygrometer is an essential tool for any cigar enthusiast, as it measures the relative humidity (RH) in a humidor. However, to ensure accurate RH readings, it is crucial to calibrate your hygrometer periodically. Here are the steps to follow to calibrate your hygrometer:

1、Find a calibration kit: A calibration kit typically consists of a small plastic bag and a calibration solution. You can find these kits at most cigar shops or online retailers.

2、Place the hygrometer in the bag: Put the hygrometer in the plastic bag, along with the calibration solution. The calibration solution should have a known RH value, typically 75%.

3、Wait for at least six hours: Seal the bag and leave it for at least six hours. This will allow the hygrometer to adjust to the RH level of the calibration solution.

4、Check the hygrometer: After six hours, take the hygrometer out of the bag and check the reading. It should display a RH reading that is close to the known RH value of the calibration solution.

5、Adjust if necessary: If the hygrometer reading is off by more than 1-2%, you may need to adjust it. Some hygrometers have an adjustment screw or knob that you can use to calibrate the device manually. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions for your specific hygrometer.

6、Repeat as necessary: It's recommended to calibrate your hygrometer at least once a year, or more frequently if you notice that the readings are consistently inaccurate.

Calibrating your hygrometer is a simple process that can help ensure the accuracy of your humidor's RH levels. By following these steps, you can enjoy your cigars with confidence, knowing that they are stored at the optimal humidity level.
