General Information
The Casa Magna D. Magnus II Optimus is a Nicaraguan hand - made Robusto. It has a sun - grown Jalapa wrapper, Nicaraguan filler and binder. The price is $8.90 each and can be bought in boxes of ten.
Appearance
It has a Colorado brown wrapper with minimal veins and a firm box press. The label is a new yellow and red band with “Domus Magnus Limitada”. It has a long nippled end and a foot band. It smells of bitter - sweet chocolate and light leather.
Construction
The wrapper is hard to squeeze and has some light oiliness. It takes extra heat to light the foot, but then burns straight with 1 - 2 touch - ups, dropping 1 ½ - inch chunks of salt and pepper ash. The draw is firm, but not a large amount of smoke per puff.
Flavor
- First Third: Initially, there is soapiness and astringency, then slightly sweet tobacco with a touch of cognac/rum. Retrohale is fragrant, slightly floral with leather notes. Near the end, there is leather and spiced meatiness.
- Second Third: Coffee bean and bitter chocolate flavors with acidity and saltiness. Towards the end, there is significant pepperiness with dark chocolate and coffee bean.
- Third Third: The draw opens up. Maltiness becomes the key flavor along with other flavors from the second third.
Value
For under $9, it offers good value, especially when bought in boxes of ten.
Although the flavors lack cohesion and the acidity is annoying, the cigar has potential to age well and develop more complex flavors over time.
