General Information

The Juan Lopez Short Torpedo was released in 2008 for the Caribbean market and is the only regional edition for that zone. It's a 5 x 50 short torpedo. A box of 25 costs around $385. It's hand - made and has its origin in Cuba.

Appearance

Wrapped in a brown leaf with no visible imperfections. It's not tightly rolled with tiny gaps. After months in the humidor, it had no particular pre - light smell and a moderate amount of oil.

Construction

After an easy cut, the pre - draw was tight with more resistance. It had a slow burn and little smoke that quickly dissipated.

Flavor

  • One third: Pre - draw had bursts of spice, but first pulls had toasted notes of almonds, bread and perhaps cocoa, with almost no spice. Towards the end, powerful leathery flavors appeared.
  • Two thirds: Featured stringent, rough, mostly leathery flavors, lacking depth.
  • Three thirds: A full - bodied, old - school Cuban with a complex bouquet of pepper, wood and leather.

Value

The regional edition is overpriced, and it would be better in the $8 - 10 range.

Overall, due to the disappointing second third and high price, it's not a must - have, but it has ageing potential.
